J.E. Bonnal: Piano Works

Oeuvres pour Piano
Series: Editions Durand
Publisher: Editions Max Eschig
Composer: Joseph Ermend-Bonnal

The musical creativity of Bonnal (1880-1944), a disciple of Fauré, often draws on literature or poetry, though it can also arise from an intimate feeling that is biographical in nature or from his own sensitivity towards the specific nature of southwestern France. His musical style is characterized by elaborate harmonies and a melodic construction that is most often modal. The use of folksong, or even its evocation in an imaginary folklore, is a frequent feature of his works. Here, for the first time in one album, is the whole of his piano output, with the exception of his teaching pieces for children, which are republished separately.

Slow waltzes enjoyed a special vogue in Parisian salons of the early twentieth century, leading Debussy – with a twinkle in his eye – to produce his piano waltz “La plus que lente” (“The Slower-than-Slow”). Parisian publisher Durand brought Debussy’s piano waltz, issued in July 1910, to a wider public by publishing it that same year as a supplement to Le Figaro, as well as in arrangements (by others) for violin and piano and for piano, 4-hands
