Book 3 concentrates more fully on music theory, exploring new concepts such as interval quality, chord function, cadences, and melody writing. History is correlated to the theory pages, teaching students the origins of the theoretical concepts they are learning. Students then use their newfound knowledge to compose and analyze music, and learn how it all relates to the history of music through the centuries. Students can be challenged further with optional listening/ear-training activities that appear throughout the book.
