莫札特的變奏曲有15曲，此類音樂的家庭趣味濃厚，以直接的通俗性為目標，過半數的8首是在旅行中所作，以當時流行的歌曲為主題即興寫成一連串變奏曲作曲家的變奏技法不但已經成熟，展示卓越的鋼琴技巧，也引起當地貴族聽眾的注意，被視為模範的經典作品，是當時非常盛行的曲種。最為人熟知的，就是K.265，俗稱「小星星變奏曲」。
